Connect your AI client
Every client uses the same URL. The first time, it opens a browser window where you sign in with the Google account you use on this site.
https://mcp.shardconnector.com/mcp
No space yet? Sign in, connect your vault, and come back once the dashboard says it’s ready.
How it works
-
01
Connect
Add the URL to your client with one of the guides below.
-
02
Approve
Sign in with Google in the window your client opens, and allow access to your vault.
-
03
Ask
Ask about your notes in plain words. Changes sync to every device through Obsidian Sync.
Pick your client
claude.ai and Claude Desktop
Add to ClaudeOpens Claude with the name and URL filled in. Check them, click Add, and sign in with Google when Claude asks.
Or add it yourself:
- Open Customize, then Connectors.
- Click +, then Add custom connector, name it Obsidian and paste the URL.
- Click Add and sign in with Google.
The Claude apps for iPhone and Android pick up the connector the next time you sign in. The Free plan allows one custom connector.
On chatgpt.com
- Open Plugins, click Add, then Add custom MCP server.
- Name it Obsidian, paste the URL under Server URL and keep OAuth as the authentication.
- Tick I understand and want to continue and click Create as a plugin.
- Install it from the Personal tab and sign in with Google.
- In a chat, type @ and pick Obsidian.
Custom MCP servers work on the web on Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu plans. On Pro, ChatGPT can only read and search your notes. In a workspace, an admin may need to allow you to create plugins with MCP servers.
Run this in your terminal
claude mcp add --transport http --scope user obsidian https://mcp.shardconnector.com/mcp
Then run /mcp in Claude Code, pick obsidian and sign in with Google.
--scope user makes it available in every project. Leave it out to add it to the current project only.
Opens Cursor and asks you to install the server. Then click Connect next to obsidian in Cursor’s MCP settings and sign in with Google.
Or add it to ~/.cursor/mcp.json yourself:
{
"mcpServers": {
"obsidian": {
"url": "https://mcp.shardconnector.com/mcp"
}
}
}
Opens VS Code and asks you to install the server. When it starts, VS Code asks you to sign in with Google.
Or run this in your terminal:
code --add-mcp '{"name":"obsidian","type":"http","url":"https://mcp.shardconnector.com/mcp"}'
Use the server from Copilot Chat in agent mode.
Run these in your terminal
codex mcp add obsidian --url https://mcp.shardconnector.com/mcp
codex mcp login obsidian
The second command opens a browser window to sign in with Google. The Codex IDE extension uses the same setup.
Any client that supports remote MCP servers works. Most take a config like this:
{
"mcpServers": {
"obsidian": {
"url": "https://mcp.shardconnector.com/mcp"
}
}
}
What your client needs
- Streamable HTTP transport
- OAuth 2.1 sign-in. The server registers your client on its own, so there’s no client ID, secret or API key to enter.
A client that only runs local servers can reach it through the mcp-remote bridge: npx -y mcp-remote https://mcp.shardconnector.com/mcp.
Things to try
Each link opens a new chat with the prompt filled in. Make sure the connector is turned on for that chat. On ChatGPT Pro, only the prompts that read your notes work.
-
“Search my Obsidian vault for notes about my reading list and tell me what’s on it.”
-
“Read this week’s daily notes in Obsidian and summarize what I worked on.”
-
“Add a task to my Inbox note in Obsidian: call the dentist on Friday.”
-
“Find the notes in my Obsidian vault that mention Project Atlas and list their open tasks.”
-
“Create a note in Obsidian at Ideas/Weekend hike.md with a packing list for two days of hiking.”
-
“Look at the folders in my Obsidian vault and suggest a cleaner structure. Don’t change anything yet.”
What your agent can and can’t do
It works in the one vault you connected, and only when you ask it to in your client.
It can
- Search notes by name, folder or contents
- List the files in the vault or in a folder
- Read notes, canvases and bases
- Create notes and folders
- Edit notes by replacing exact text
- Move notes to a Trash/ folder in your vault, where you can move them back
It can’t
- Delete anything for good
- See your other vaults
- See .obsidian or other hidden files, so your settings and plugins stay out of reach
- Open images, PDFs, audio or video, which aren’t synced to your space
- Rename or move notes, other than to the trash
Questions
What is MCP?
The Model Context Protocol is an open standard that lets AI clients use tools from other services. Shard Connector gives your client tools to search, read and edit the notes in your vault.
Which clients work?
Claude, ChatGPT, Claude Code, Cursor, VS Code and Codex have guides above. Any other client that supports remote MCP servers with OAuth sign-in works too.
Do I need an API key?
No. You sign in with Google when your client connects, and the server finds your space from your account.
Why is everyone’s URL the same?
The Google sign-in decides whose vault you reach, so the URL alone doesn’t give anyone access to your notes.
My client says the vault is syncing
Your space sleeps while nobody uses it and catches up with Obsidian Sync when it wakes. Wait a few seconds and ask again.
How do I disconnect?
Remove the connector or server in your client’s settings. To cut off every client at once, use Delete space on your dashboard. Your notes stay in Obsidian Sync.
